Kiva Micro Finance

Yesterday I had a very conversation with my doctor. She had just finished a masters in politics and I didn’t have anything wrong with me so we ended up talking about global issues. She introduced me to Kiva, a micro finance organisation which links people with too much money to people with not enough money.

Kiva’s mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty.

While studying on Gov Love (Centrelink calls it youth allowance) my income was in the top 10% in the world. That wage was enough for me to live comfortably. Currently I am working full time and I just invested $250 in a ukulele (plus a bit more on a case). If I can spend $250 on myself I think I can invest a little in a stranger by lending them a bit of cash to imhttp://www.gregology.net/glog/wp-admin/post.php?post=437&action=edit&message=1prove their lives.

You can see where I’ve chosen to invest my money here. Ideally I would like to target my loans towards education and health projects but there aren’t many options in those fields, I suppose everyone wants to support those fields. If you find something especially worthy of support please let me know so I can help out :)

FYI This is an F chord on a Ukulele :) but I still don’t have a mic :(

Ukulele it is

The Ukulele had two votes to every one for the Banjo and Guitar (not including mine). Over 60 votes are recorded on the poll but 56 of them were computer generated to make me feel better about people actually caring what instrument I play :)

The search took the best part of the day but Allans Music sorted me out. When I entered there was a gentleman with his son playing the Ukuleles so I pressed him for advice and after 15 minutes I felt confident to start dealing with the sales persons. My new friend suggested paying at least $100 to get a good sound which he demonstrated by playing one of the $29 China jobs. I have no idea if I got a good deal but apparently it was end of year sales so my new toy, a KA-KC Kaia concert Hawaiian Koa Ukulele set me back $250 (reduced from $335). An electronic tuner set me back $10 but my card didn’t have enough money for a microphone, which is fine because I don’t think my playing is yet recording worthy :)

Experimenting with squatting

The toilet stalls at uni have anti squatting signs similar to this one.

At first I thought the idea of squatting on a toilet was silly but I don’t like blindly obeying signs and I like to try new things so…

And I’m glad I did, it is amazing! I have never felt so empty. After a little research I found out that squatting is the healthier option too. It minimises “fecal stagnation” (which just sounds awful) and reduces the risk of colon cancer, colitis, Crohn’s disease, contamination of the small intestine, diverticulosis, gynecological disorders, heart attacks, hemorrhoids, hiatus hernia and GERD, pregnancy and childbirth issues, prostate disorders, and sexual dysfunction!

Tips for new squatters; aim forward and make sure there is a toilet brush available.

Yet again, not obeying a sign has worked out well for me.

Water proof phone

Last Weekend I was out with some mates at a pub in Manly and I pulled out my water proof phone which obviously needed proving after a few drinks. It had been raining heavily for a few days and there was a bucket collecting water on the floor. While half way through a conversation with a mate I dropped it in, pulled it out, and the conversation continued. While it was pressed up against my face I noticed an odd smell. Soon after I figured out that we were on the ground floor of a two story pub so the water in the bucket wasn’t rain water.

Stinky Phone

reenactment…

I’m back online with the help of Virgin Broadband (which evidently works find with Ubuntu 10.04/Mint 9 in Australia) and all the book reading I promised myself I would do never happened :( Having books in my room makes me look smart so they’re still useful.

Wildlife in Pittwater

Once a week I volunteer for the Street Mission sailing program. We take clients for a sail around Pittwater which is the next harbour north of Sydney. Here are some photos of wildlife I’ve taken.

This is a pretty little bird that visited our boat.

There were thousands of jellyfish, this photo doesn’t do it justice.

Here is a Wallaby at the Basin.

I came across this sponge while looking for a present for mothers day :) It was cheap but after handling it I got a rash and it felt like pins and needles on the inside of my skin. I don’t think my mum would have liked it very much.

This is my favourite wildlife experience in Pittwater. I’ve seen dolphins before while sailing but these ones were different, they kept swimming sideways so they could look at me and once I moved from the back of the boat they followed me. It was very nice of them :)

I’ve also seen fairy penguins, sea eagles (having sex, they’re really really loud), and snakes but I haven’t been quick enough with my camera :(

RIP Molly

I found out today that Molly was put down yesterday. I loved that dog. I wasn’t going to see her again but for some reason it’s harder to deal with knowing that she’s not existing atm even though she was never going to exist in my life. I know that might sound self centred but she wasn’t self aware and wasn’t scared of non existence so her death isn’t bad for her. Maybe I’m just trying to deal with her death :( She failed the tests they do to see if they can rehouse her. Stu said he would take her and find a home for her but by the time mum contacted the RSPCA today it was too late :( My mum said to me today “Do you think she’s getting on well with Lulu?” I wanted to believe that but I couldn’t. It’s strange that people are only willing to accept non existence in 3 dimensions of the 4 common dimensions.

Ninemsn Spin

I found an interesting spin video on ninemsn. The title “Abbott admits to policy lies” interested me enough to click. After watching the 7:30 Report I figured out what actually happened.

(Notice the tie…)
Tony said;
“The statements that need to be taken absolutely as gospel truth are those carefully prepared, scripted remarks”.
Ninemsn reported this in a very colourful way. Their report started with the;
“Shadow treasurer Joe Hockey has defended opposition leader Tony Abbott’s…”
A clip from QandA was shown where Joe attacks Kevin for breaking his promises. The tale ended with images of Tony at a charity dinner and;
“…the event is aimed at raising money for youth cancer.”
To be fair, they did make mention of Kevin’s attendance at the dinner too but this was done while showing images of Tony talking to an attractive lady and no actually footage of Kevin at the event was shown. Ninemsn managed to report a story about a politician admitting they sometimes lie without actually showing the gaff. Well done! This is the motivation I need for my vote for policies site.
