However, accepting refugees entails much more than just granting a visa.
It requires providing settlement services, language classes and assistance in finding a job.
In this week's Australia in Focus, Rebecca Lewis takes a look at ACL - one of the government-contracted refugee settlement service providers, which helps new arrivals in Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle.

Many sporting enthusiasts around the world are still trying to work out why the International Sports Press Association overlooked an eight times gold medal winner... in awarding its &uot;Athlete of the Year&uot; to someone who only took home three golds.
In a controversial decision, the Association has named triple Beijing Olympic gold medallist - Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt - its 2008 athlete of the year ... ahead of American super fish Michael Phelps.
Bolt won the Men's 100- and 200-metres events .. and helped his country's sprint relay team to victory - all in world record times.
Phelps' achievement was to win the most gold medals at a single Olympic Games ever - with eight gold - to take his total career Olympic gold medal tally to a record 14.
More than 5-hundred journalists from 96 countries voted in the poll. Bolt received about two percent more of the popular vote than Phelps.
Nicole Jeffrey is a former president of the International Sports Press Association.
She told Garfield Samuels that while she's surprised by the result, she does understand why it happened.....
